Ryan Elijah, the former Central Florida television journalist who defeated Trump-backed incumbent Cory Mills in the August 18 Republican primary, warned against a "never-ending war" with Iran while acknowledging the need to prevent a nuclear threat. Elijah, who received 47% of the vote in the primary compared to Mills' 34%, told Fox News Digital that constituents in Volusia and Seminole counties are concerned about prolonged military engagement and want the conflict drawn down.

The military engagement with Iran is currently affecting global energy markets and American pocketbooks, according to Elijah. He stated that the United States is dealing with a decade-long issue involving Iran and its proxies, which have targeted and killed Americans. While conceding that the U.S. military is working to end the conflict, Elijah emphasized that representatives must listen to the people. He noted that residents in his district have been clear that they do not want a perpetual war and share his belief that the conflict needs to be de-escalated while ensuring Iran remains a non-nuclear threat.

Elijah, who ran without the president's endorsement, positioned himself as an independent voice for the seventh district. He stated that he will support policies that benefit the country and the district, but will oppose those he disagrees with, even if they align with the administration. This stance contrasts with his predecessor, Mills, who faced sexual misconduct allegations and expulsion threats before losing the primary. Elijah claimed Trump privately encouraged Mills to withdraw, though Trump had originally endorsed him.

On domestic issues, Elijah identified affordability as the defining issue for 2026 voters, noting it lacks a quick fix but requires government accountability on spending and inflation. He argued that controlling government spending would lower interest rates and reduce the cost of living. Regarding immigration, Elijah cited improvements under GOP leadership but argued enforcement should focus on criminals. He pointed to cooperation between federal, local, and state authorities in Central Florida as a model, noting that local sheriffs are handling immigration more effectively than in other parts of the country. He stressed that ICE needs to focus on removing criminals and that the issue cannot be resolved in six or 12 months.

Elijah pledged to prioritize transparency and accountability, stating that he has nothing to hide regarding his business and personal dealings. He emphasized that no one is above the law and that laws must be upheld for both Democrats and Republicans. The former journalist said he stepped into politics after recognizing the risk of losing the Republican-leaning district to Democrats following Mills' scandals. He believes the community's trust gave them a strong position to hold the seat in November.

Elijah will face Navy veteran and former NASA employee Bale Dalton in the November 3 general election.
