The Marin County Sheriff's Office confirmed the deaths of Ann Mannix, a former San Francisco deputy police chief and SWAT commander, her 24-year-old daughter Katie, and their 68-year-old husband, retired San Francisco Police Sgt. Kevin Mannix, in what authorities are treating as a suspected double-murder suicide. The incident occurred at the family's residence in Mill Valley, a coastal community in Marin County. Deputies responded to a 911 call around 5 p.m. Sunday and discovered the three individuals dead inside the home. The caller, identified only as another resident of the residence, reportedly escaped safely before police arrived. Miguel Almaguer, the public information officer for the Marin County Sheriff's Office, stated in a release that the preliminary investigation indicates a suspected double-murder suicide involving three individuals, noting that the suspected shooter is male. At a subsequent news briefing, Almaguer specifically identified Kevin Mannix as the shooter but declined to discuss evidence found within the home. Autopsies for all three victims were scheduled for Tuesday. Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, issued a statement Monday expressing profound sadness over the loss of Mannix and her family members. Wong highlighted Ann Mannix's historic role as the first woman to join and later spearhead the San Francisco SWAT team. He also noted her involvement in youth sports and her position on the board of the city's Police Activities League. The association described the tragedy as leaving the SFPD family reeling, adding that there are no words to capture the depth of the loss or simple answers to the painful questions arising from the event. Lou Barberini, a former San Francisco police officer and Bay Area columnist who knew the couple, described Ann Mannix as a great athlete, a good cop, and a well-liked individual with significant talent and competence. San Francisco police did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the incident.
