Reddit (RDDT) shares have demonstrated volatility significantly higher than the S&P 500 since the company's listing 2.5 years ago, creating a risk profile where losses on down days outpace gains on up days. Investors holding the stock alongside standard index funds face amplified market swings that compound existing portfolio risk.
Over the past year of daily closes, the S&P 500 gained an average of 0.65% on up days, during which a $10,000 investment in Reddit grew to approximately $10,130. Conversely, on the index's average down day, which saw a 0.6% loss, that same $10,000 in Reddit fell to about $9,850. The stock rose twice as far as the index on positive days but fell about two and a half times as far on negative sessions. Reddit's volatility over this period sat at 70%, compared to 13.0% for the S&P 500, with the social media platform moving roughly 2% for every 1% shift in the broader index.
Since its listing, Reddit has returned 56% a year, far exceeding the S&P 500's roughly 17% annual gain. However, this performance came with 81% annual volatility, well above the index's 15.5%. When dividing returns by volatility to measure efficiency, Reddit yields a score of 0.69, compared to about 1.1 for the S&P 500. This indicates that while Reddit delivered higher raw returns, it compensated investors less efficiently for the turbulence endured.
Recent financial results suggest the stock may not stabilize soon. Advertising revenue accounted for $762 million of the $805 million Reddit generated in the second quarter of 2026, meaning nearly all sales come from a single line of business. Total revenue rose 61% from a year earlier. On a July 30, 2026 call, management noted that a decline in search referrals offset daily active user growth from product work. The company acknowledged limited visibility into search traffic and expects that traffic to remain volatile.
A business deriving nearly all revenue from advertising while lacking clarity on search traffic appears positioned to continue moving more than the broader market. If the past year's pattern holds, investors will gain more from Reddit than from index funds during market rises but lose more during declines. Adding Reddit to a portfolio with other holdings dependent on advertiser budgets concentrates exposure to that specific revenue stream.
