New York City Police Department Detective Jose Mercedes left Jacobi Medical Center in Morris Park on Monday, walking on his own feet after being stabbed multiple times during a robbery in the Bronx last week. Officials confirmed the detective was wheeled from his hospital room before standing in front of a group of applauding officers.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced the discharge on X, describing the moment as a display of strength and determination. She stated that hundreds of NYPD members were present to cheer Mercedes as he moved from his wheelchair to walking unaided. Tisch added that the department stands behind Mercedes as he continues his recovery and vowed that detectives would pursue those responsible for the crime.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon in the Norwood neighborhood when Mercedes was off-duty and clearing the trunk of his car. According to officials, two suspects on an e-bike attempted to snatch his gold chain. Mercedes fought back during the struggle, sustaining seven stab and slash wounds before the assailants fled. Despite his injuries, Mercedes pursued the attackers on foot for approximately two blocks before collapsing near East 206th Street and Rochambeau Avenue.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Tisch visited Mercedes at Jacobi Hospital shortly after the attack. On Friday, Mamdani stated he had visited the detective and his family, expressing hope for a quick and complete recovery. Police reported on Monday that the two attackers remain at large.
