Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson posted a rare public criticism of the Washington Commanders on X following the team's tie with the New York Giants. Johnson, who invested approximately 4% in Josh Harris' $6.05 billion purchase of the franchise in 2023, expressed disbelief at the team's handling of the final moments in overtime.
The game ended in a draw after quarterback Jayden Daniels ran out the clock during overtime, seemingly unaware that the team had no timeouts remaining and insufficient time to set up a potential game-winning field goal. Johnson wrote, "I’m in total disbelief my Commanders had such poor clock management in today’s overtime game against the Giants," adding, "All we had to do was kick the field goal and we would have won the game!"
The Commanders had held a significant lead earlier in the contest. Daniels scored on a 26-yard run with 11:05 remaining to put Washington ahead 27-13. Giants quarterback Jameis Winston subsequently led New York to two touchdowns, tying the score at 27-27 before the overtime period began. The final result left Washington with a season record of 1-3-1.
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn attributed the miscalculation to coaching decisions rather than player error. Quinn stated that the sequencing of the play was his responsibility, noting that an out-of-bounds throw or a different clock management strategy could have allowed the team to attempt the kick earlier. Quinn explained that he should have positioned Daniels differently to secure the win sooner, emphasizing that gaining additional yardage was unnecessary for the final kick.
The incident occurred in Landover, Maryland, on Sunday afternoon. While Giants rookie kicker Dominic Zvada missed all three of his field goal attempts during regulation, the Commanders' inability to convert their own opportunity in overtime defined the post-game narrative.
