BlackRock (BLK) downgraded its view on US equities to Neutral on Tuesday, a move that signals a shift in positioning for holders of the world's largest asset manager. The firm simultaneously upgraded its stance on US Treasurys, specifically favoring short-term bonds, as higher yields improve the potential return profile for fixed income relative to other asset classes. The strategic adjustment was outlined in research conducted by BlackRock strategists Jean Boivin, Rick Rieder, and Wei Li.

The decision to take profits on US stocks is tied to the current macroeconomic environment, where higher yields and potentially excessive Federal Reserve tightening expectations have created an opportunity to unwind the firm's long-standing underweight position in US Treasurys. That underweight stance had been a mainstay of BlackRock's strategy for most of the last six years. By rotating into short-term bonds, the team aims to manage potential volatility associated with the ongoing artificial intelligence buildout.

Despite the broader downgrade of US equities, BlackRock maintained its optimism regarding AI-specific opportunities. The strategists stated they retain conviction in AI fundamentals and continue to prefer AI stocks within the US equity allocation. This distinction highlights a bifurcated market view where non-AI sectors face headwinds from rising capital costs, while AI names remain supported by fundamental strength.

The downgrade arrives as non-AI areas of the market experience heightened selling pressure. Rising US Treasury yields have increased the cost of capital for companies that may not be growing as rapidly as their AI-focused peers. According to new analysis from the Kobeissi Letter, approximately 84% of S&P 500 (^GSPC) stocks are now trading at least 10% below their all-time highs. The breadth of the pullback is significant, with 59% of S&P 500 stocks down at least 20% from their highs, 41% down more than 30%, and 17% off by more than 50%.

Rick Rieder characterized the recent move in yields as a necessary reality check for investors rather than an immediate crisis. Speaking on Yahoo Finance's Sozzi Unleashed program in late September, Rieder described the situation as an "eye-opener" that requires careful consideration. The shift in BlackRock's asset allocation underscores the increasing importance of yield dynamics in determining equity valuations, particularly for sectors lacking the growth profiles currently driving market performance.
